Thank you for your continuing interest in, and support of our Cathedral.
This year Edmund Blacket's 'crowning materpiece' is 135 years old. It remains structually sound but it is inevitably showing signs of its age. We successfully addressed significant problems caused by rising damp in Stage 1 of the restoration program in 2016/17. Towards the end of 2017 an engineer's report alerted us to the condition of the stonework, particularly the parapets, finials and crosses. As a result, some finials and crosses were removed and their bases capped until we can afford to replace them.
The work of restoration has continued throughout the past 12 months, under the supervision of Michael Fox AM, one of Australia's leading heritage architects.
We have undertaken urgent repairs to the parapets at the western end of the Cathedral. This work, costing $100,000 has been funded from the National Trust (NSW) Cathedral Restoration Fund and a grant from Goulburn Mulwaree Council.
We now have a beautifully restored font thanks to the generosity of the Friends of the Cathedral. Please come and see it!
Much restoration work remains. While the major problems caused by rising damp were successfully addressed in Stage 1, urgent work is required on the Reredos and the Great East Window at an estimated cost of approximately $200,000. Our engineers have now identifed further structural and safety concerns with the stonework in other parts of the Cathedral. A detailed evaluation of the urgency and cost of this work is currently being undertaken.
The Restoration Committee continues to explore opportunities for donations and grant funding from a variety of sources including foundations and all levels of government. This inevitably takes time. The recent restoration work has used almost all the funds in the Restoration Fund Appeal account. Although we are confident of obtaining further grants we need to address the most urgent work as quickly as possible.
On behalf of the committee and trustees of the National Trust-St.Saviour's Cathedral Heritage Restoration Appeal Fund we thank all who have kindly donated in the past to help conserve this important and much-loved national landmark and welcome your continued financial support.
